upgraded from server 2012r2 to serve 2016. now the backend service is gone. i cannot start the softerra service without the backend service running, as it depends on it.
please help. how do i restore the get the backend service back

What exactly do you mean by backend service is gone? Do you not see AdaxesBackend in the list of Windows services while Softerra Adaxes Service is present? If that is correct, try running Repair for Softerra Adaxes from Windows Programs and Features.

This issue occured after I did an inplace upgrade fromn Server 2012R2 to Server 2016 Standard.

I have done the softerra adaxes 2021.1 repair twice , however the AdaxesBackend service is still missing from local windows services.

Unfortunately, we never came across such a behavior and it cannot be related to Adaxes itself. The fact that the service is gone and repair does not work means that something went wrong during the Windows upgrade. Most probably, there were significant changes between server 2021 R2 and 2016 which caused a full uninstall of AD LDS used as Adaxes backed. As such, your Adaxes configuration is lost. The best solution in this case is to just re-install Adaxes. If you have a backup of your configuration, you can restore it then: https://www.adaxes.com/help/BackupRestoreConfiguration.
