Is a SMS provider required for sending SMS messages?

Currently we send SMS alerts via email address, for example number@vtext.com, number@txt.att.net, etc.

We store the addresses in a field in AD.

Hello,

Try the following:

  1. Open the SMS Settings property page.
  2. Type %mobilenumber% in the To field.
  3. Type %smstext% in the Body field.
  4. Select the property you use to store e-mail addresses in the Property used to get mobile numbers of AD users field.
  5. Save the changes.

Hi Eugene,

I set the settings like you showed, and when I try a test to 1234567890@txt.att.net, I get the following error:

Test SMS
Mobile phone number '1234567890@txtattnet' contains illegal characters.

I replaced the real number with '1234567890'

Hello,

That happens because the property value contains characters that cannot be used in phone numbers. Sorry, my fault.

You can do it in a different way:

  1. Open the SMS Settings property page.
  2. In the To field insert a value reference to the property that stores e-mail addresses for SMS. For example, if the property name is smsEmail, type %smsEmail%
  3. Type %mobilenumber% in the Subject field (a value reference to the mobilenumber property is required).
  4. Type %smstext% in the Body field.
  5. Select Mobile Phone in the Property used to get mobile numbers of AD users field.

Hi Eugene,

I tried this and it did not work. I am using %ms-Exch-Extension-Attribute-8% in the To: field, and I still get the same error, Mobile phone number '1234567890@txtattnet' contains illegal characters.

I am not sure if the periods are the characters it does not like since it seems to be removing them. txt.att.net is turning to txtattnet.

Hello,

Can you post a screenshot of the SMS Settings property page here?

Hi Eugene,

Here is the screenshot.

I have also tried with the "Property used to get mobile number of AD users" set to "Mobile Phone" with the same results.

Hello,

OK, I think it requires a bit more explanation.
First of all, the value reference you used for the Exchange custom attribute is incorrect. It should be %extensionAttribute8%.

Also, you cannot use the Test button to check your SMS settings if you want to send SMS messages via e-mail addresses stored in a property of user accounts.

And finally, to make Adaxes happy, a mobile phone number must be stored in any text property of AD user accounts. It could be a fake phone number that contains random digits, but it is required. The property that stores mobile phone numbers must be selected in the Property used to get mobile number of AD users combo box.

So, make sure your SMS settings look exactly like in the following screenshot:

To test SMS settings:

  1. Select a user in Adaxes Administration Console.
  2. Right-click the user, select All Tasks, point to Send, and then select SMS.

Hi Eugene,

Thanks. It works now.

I ended up using "Employee ID" for the "Property used to get mobile numbers" since it already has a number in the field.
